During Professional week, the pros/press get a chance to vote in the Discovery Award 2009 for one of the 15 nominated photographers. My vote went to Moira Ricci (nominated by Giovanna Calvenzi) for her photomontages. Italian Ricci has used digital manipulation to insert herself in the frame with her dead mother “to be close to and observe her” as well as to “warn her of danger”. Ricci “seeks solace” for this death and the sense of longing in these beautifully reworked images is palpable.
In contrast, Martin Parr’s nomination, Rimaldas Viksraitis has produced a body of work in black and white which documents his home village in Lithuania. These photos capture “in slightly crazy, deliciously surrealistic images” a vanishing way of life and would have got my second vote, if it were possible.
