Photo competition link and Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize finalists announced

I will be posting Episode Two from Arles tomorrow, in the meantime, here are some appetizers.

For information on Photography Grants and Awards, visit Judith Den Hollander’s comprehensive blog about international grants and awards. The blog “lists the major photographic honours, funding opportunities and competitions for photographers and is a resource on notable and emerging photographers”. Hollander has stopped updating the site in July so she can dedicate herself to her “own projects”.

“Two young Iranian photographers, Abbas Kowsari and Newsha Tavakolian, have been named as finalists along with four other artists for the Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize, (MOP CAP), the first award dedicated to the talent of emerging Iranian artists. The award is presented by Magic of Persia – a London based charity – in collaboration with the London and Tehran-based cultural consultancy, Candlestar. The shortlist of artists to take part in the finalists’ exhibition was decided by a distinguished international jury, led by Sheena Wagstaff, Chief Curator at Tate Modern.” The artists are:

Farhad Ahrarnia
Mahmoud Bakhshi Moakhar
Vahid Chamani
Sahand Hesamiyan
Abbas Kowsari
Newsha Tavakolian

All six are now preparing for a major exhibition of their work at the Royal College of Art, (RCA), London, 15-17 October 2009. The winner will be announced on the 17 October at the RCA. Following the announcement of the winner, all the finalists’ work will be auctioned at Christie’s. Half will go to the artists and half to the artists residency programme established by Magic of Persia.
