Photo News: Art of Giving competition winner, call for Kodachrome entries and Magnum professional practice workshop

A quick roundup of some news from Art of Giving on the winner in the Photography category, a call for entries by the Association of Photographers (AOP) of Kodachrome images and Magnum London calls for applications for a series of weekend events on professional practice aimed at professional photographers. Sunday 18 October deadline date for Magnum workshop and 18 November for Kodachrome show.

The winners of the Art of Giving competition at the Saatchi Gallery have been announced. The competition is split into three categories: Painting and Drawing, Sculpture and Photography. Edward Bowman was awarded first prize in the Photography category.

Bowman, who graduated from the University of Derby with an MA in Photography, and from the University of Westminster with an MA in Design and Media Arts get’s his inspiration from the past, “My work is entirely about the past. A search for what has been lost – around the theme absence.” He has taken photographs in India, China and Egypt. He currently lives in London.

Thirty shortlisted artists from the Art of Giving Competition showed work to raise money for charity through the sale of art. Comedian Vic Reeves, Photographer Terry O’Neill and Artist Christian Furr judged the competition.

The AOP Gallery invites AOP Members and members of the public to submit a selection of their most treasured Kodachrome images and slides to feature in an exhibition.

The Call for Submissions are open to all AOP members and members of the public. The inclusion into the exhibition is subject to editorial control.

Beyond this, there are no boundaries on the themes and content of the work.

Entrants will be informed of the final selection by Friday 19 November, and further information about the exhibition and launch event will be updated on the AOP website.

The AOP Gallery plans to host an exhibition of images produced from Kodachrome film. The exhibition will run from 18 January – 10 February 2011.

Magnum Photos is holding a series of weekend lectures and presentations giving advice on the best means in engaging with and working in the image industry.

One hour presentations on their subject of expertise, with plenty of time for questions and informal opportunities to liaise with peers.
Topics under discussion will include:
social networking and web promotion
book publishing
editorial features
commercial photography
stock sale photographs
photographic print sales
exhibition structures.

Monica Allende, Picture Editor, The Sunday Times Magazine; David Birkin, Managing Director, DMB Media; David Hurn – Magnum photographer; Steve Macleod – Creative Director, Metro Imaging; Christian Payne – Social Technologist aka Documentally – you can even listen to an eight-minute interview I did with Payne for the blog a while back; Chris Barwick; Michael Mack; Fiona Rogers – Cultural & Education Coordinator, Magnum Photos; Sophie Wright

IdeasTap, Woolyard in London Bridge. IdeasTap will be displaying an exhibition of finalist work from the IdeasTap Photographic Award 2010 in association with Magnum Photos.

“Participation in this event will be limited and successful candidates will be chosen on the basis of their photographic experience and the perceived benefit to the applicant’s career. This event is not aimed at beginners and applicants should have a high level of photographic aptitude. We recommend attendees have been published or exhibited at least twice during their careers.”
